Initial Contact Sheet - Water |
For my initial contact sheet, I decided to look at the relationship between people and water. Therefore, I took pictures of everyday ways in which we use water, such as, for drinking, washing, cooking, and for the use of growth for plants and food etc.
I have decided to look at the relationship with people and water because water plays a very important role in our lives and many people do take it for granted and waste it. |
Enlargements
In this first enlargement I tried capturing the motion of the water when being poured from a height. As you can see when poured the water doesn't flow in a smooth motion, but in a slight contoured way which gives the appearance of the water being solid. In this photograph water is being poured gradually from a glass at a height, you can see as it is being poured the movement of the water changes and becomes a more thin yet 3-D like, twisted structure. It is a true representation of a glass or water being poured, however, has been slightly edited to enhance the sharpness, and vibrance of the water. I have positioned my composition the slightest bit off centre and blurred the background so the water is standing out and making a statement. I used flash when taking this photo to make a toned reflection in the water.
|
With this image I experimented by using more pressure when capturing the motion of the water. By doing this using the force of the tap the water looks like a liquid. It is simply a picture of a tap with the water on. The shape of the water differs from the previous photo as the water is more powerful instead of the soft, gentle flow from the glass. When looking at this photo and the forcefulness of the water, it reminds me of a waterfall, this is because of the way the water hits the metal and seems to explode surrounding the base. Again I centered the tap in the center as it is the main focus and as the photographer I have tried to draw all of the viewers attention to the tap. Moreover, I used flash when taking the picture because it helps create tone and also a shadow of the tap which in my opinion gives the photo a little bit more as by having a shadow it helps to push the object forward, and it helps to emphasizes and accentuate the image.
|
I chose to use this as an enlargement because it follows on from the previous enlargement, using the same pressure of water I placed a large glass of water under the tap. You can see that the flow of water changes when in the glass because it hits off the bottom of the glass and moves in a
rotated motion causing the water to created bubbles which then makes the water unclear. It is a true representation, but has been blurred in the background to help make the glass and the water more bold and exaggerated. |
I chose to use this photo as an enlargement because it links in the most with the artist Linnea Strid. It shows the need we have for water through cleanliness. For this image I have blurred the background so the hands stand out more and become the main focus, and have enhanced the vibrancy, contrasted and saturation using Photoshop. Again because I have used flash, I have been able to get more tone and contrast through the water and have used shutter speed on my camera to capture the movement more. By getting close to subject and framing the shot so that the only thing to look at really is the hands and the tap helps to block out any 'background noise' and any distractions which could draw the viewer away from the main objective of the photo.
Next I am going to look at other ways we use water to clean ourselves. |
Gillian Lambert
Gillian Lambert is a talented artist who sees beauty in what is deemed as ugly, Lambert illustrates her subjects in awkward poses;she lets them morph their features or cover themselves in objects. her subjects can be seen peeking from underneath the folds of shirts, or drenched in noodles, sauces and water. As we can see although the way Lambert has drawn her subjects is a traditional pencil drawing, her ideas and her actually composition is not. The composition could be see as very eerie and off putting, as the only thing in which has been drawn is the head, because their is no obvious sign of a neck connected to the head it could be portrayed as some what 'supernatural' and 'ghost-like'.

This enlargement is a close up photo taken of a girl who has had water poured onto her head, you can see that she is looking down in what could be described as melancholy. I have edited the photo, by altering the saturation to make it grayish and to have off tones to the photo. By doing this it has made it look unnatural and eerie, this then shows a likeness to the artist Gillian Lambert. Furthermore, I sharpened any drops of water which were noticeable so they would be more defined and prominent, adding to this I blurred the background in certain parts to create more depth in the photo. This photo gives me a sense of macabre due to the dark, serenity which it portrays. The photo affect me because I feel that the closeness of the photo creates a personal connection, in which, causes sincere emotions relating to the photo.
The way in which I composed this image was to try and get the viewer to interact with the photo, I feel that this has been successful because although the picture is eerie and dark, there is something about the photo that is mysterious and therefore, draws the viewer in. By using flash on my camera I was able to capture some reflection off of the wet hair in certain areas. |
Again this photo is like the previous photo, a portrait photograph of a girl with water being poured on her head, however, this photo isn't as zoomed in as the first one and you can now see that the water is from as shower hose, we can see this from the metal lead and also the water droplets at the top.
I framed this picture so that the subject would be off centered because I believe that it creates a stronger impact of the subjects look of pain, anguish and loneliness. This is shown as it looks like the subject is cowering away from the photographer. The photo has been roughly edited in a similar way to the previous photograph although, has not has as much exaggeration on the hair, as it is not the main focus as such anymore. Furthermore, I have added a more of a grey tone to the skin, by doing this I have emphasized more of the loneliness, grief, and the personal connection which was portrayed in the previous image is weaker or may not even be there. Moreover, by using the flash I have been able to capture the reflection more prominently. When looking at this photograph I feel that it makes you feel sympathetic of the subject and that you want to take pity on her. In my opinion it is the distance, and the eye contact (which has not been given) affects me because it feels like the subject is deliberately shying away and not wanting for you to look at her. |
For this image, I decided to lighten and add more colour to the subject, yet still try and capture the loneliness and melancholy emotions which are expressed. Again I have sharpened the water droplets to exaggerate and make them stand out more. Also, the background is slightly blurred to give more depth to the photograph. By framing the subject in the center I feel that it has created more of a statement between the photograph and the viewer.
|
This again is slightly different because I have emphasized more on the colours, as you can see the colours are now more vivid and strong. By doing this it has stood out more, even though the darkness of the subjects hair blends in with the darkness of her clothes, the small patches of colour has given enough to make a prominent statement.

Experimental Artist
Mark Mawson
Mark Mawson
Photographer Mark Mawson drops different hues and densities of paint to water to create complex illusion of colour he describes as "alien".
In this photograph, we can see that the paints in which Mawson has dropped into the water are beginning to blend and form together creating this atmospheric cloud like photograph. In my opinion I feel that, Mawson is not trying to represent something in the picture itself, but is trying to change the representation of paint in art, this is because usually in art when using paint, you use the paint to create something else, however, Mawson has made the paint the subject of the picture. The picture itself is very abstract and distorted, the bright colours in which he has used are very bold and exaggerated.

These enlargements are of different coloured inks being poured into a large tank of water, I added this into my project because the inks are a symbol of the chemicals which may be in our water, whether dangerous or not I am trying to get show that even a main life source has chemicals and toxins and that it also depends on where the water is from that it may have more than from somewhere else . I have tried to capture the blends in which happen, and also the separation of the inks when poured into the water, as when doing this experiment I found out that the inks don't blended together straight away. Furthermore, For all of these enlargements I have edited and manipulated them on photoshop to try and gain more of a likeness with Mark Mawson. For all of the enlargements I cropped them down so the only thing you could really see was the inks and a plain background, also for the background I lightened it so that the background would be the whitest it could possibly be, by doing this it has helped by bringing the inks forward so that they are not 'lost' in the photograph but the main focus. Moreover, most of these experiments have been flipped around by 180 so that the inks looks like they are rising rather than sinking. Finally, when using photoshop to edit these photographs I changed the saturation, brightness and contrast so that the colour of the inks would be more vivid and luminous.

Martin Parr is a British documentary photographer, photojournalist and photo book collector. He is known for his photographic projects that take a critical look at aspects of modern life, in particular provincial and suburban life in England. He is also a member of Magnum Photos.
In this photograph Martin Parr seems to have tried to capture the ice-lolly in which the child is consuming, this is shown in the way the photograph has been composed. The composition of this photo shows the child a third of the way across the left side of the page, this could be so the photo looks more friendly and playful. The camera has been focused on the child and the background blurred, by blurring the background it makes the child stand out more and creates a sharpness to the photo. Although the actual composition is traditional, the clothing on the child seems outdated, abstract and enhanced in some ways this could be due to the unusual mix of colours and patterns on the child's jacket.

This is a photo of a water bottle being shaken so that you can see the air bubbles which are created when shaking a bottle of water. I done this because it is a good link from the previous experiments as it is another way in which symbolises chemicals in our water supply, although it has been exaggerated, so that you can see them, it is still resembles something that is in our water supply.
I have blurred the background so it makes the water stand out, and by doing the photo shoot outside I have only used the natural light and not had to use studio lighting or a flash. |
As you can see in this photograph the bottle appears to have bent and curved, although I did not intend on that happening, I am interested by it as not only there is the illusion that the bottle had bent but when closely looking at the bottle, the water which is moving as it is being shaken, seems to look like mountains. Although the 'mountains' are upside down, you can still see it as in the corner of the bottle by the lid you can see the 'highest peak'. Due to the reflection in which water creates it has given a lot of tone, colour and shading which has helped course this image to appear. Although it was an accidental image which has occurred, you could now say that the imagery in which has become 'mountains' in the bottle could be a symbolism to the fact that fresh water does come from the mountains such as Evian water comes from the French Alps.

I done this experiment because it is another way in which humans waste water, although I have exaggerated it by making my subject spit out the water forcefully as a symbolism rather than realistically. For this photo shoot I used a studio with studio back lighting as well as a flash on top. Using shutter speed on my camera I was able to capture the water as it happens so the spray can be captured the right way.
Alban Grosdidier
Alban Grosdidier is a young French photographer and graphic designer, living between Copenhagen and Paris. Graduated from ESAG Penninghen, his work revolves around social and political reflections and is composed of photographs, books, installations and sculptures.
In this photograph Grosdidier has taken a picture of a man submerged underwater, he has captured the movement in the water which has created an illusion like image in which also could be described as deforming or disfiguring the face.
Alban Grosdidier has edited this image and made it black and white , by doing this I feel like it creates a deeper meaning towards the image and in my opinion it creates a symbolic image of drowning in your own sorrows and emotions.

These enlargements I have submerged my subject underwater in the same style as Alban Grosdidier. I have cropped my photos so that all you can see it the distorted image of the top halve of the subjects body. To take these photos I used flash and overhead lighting so I could truly capture the movement, ripples and reflection of the water.
Experiments - Videos
|
This is a video of running taps, I done this to show the wastage of water.
|
|
This is a video of a person washing their hands, I done this so it can be a virtual source of how we use water in our everyday lives.
|
Final Piece
My final piece is of a photograph from my Alban Grosdidier contact sheet, but on top of that I am going to pour more water on top to create more movement and distortion to the image. By doing this it creates more distortion and volume to the picture and creates extra effect.
Videos
|
These videos are of the stages in which I took the pictures for my final piece, the first video is of the water filling up in the sink, the second and third is of the movement which was created to capture the image as I had to distort the image more using water.

In this image I have sharpened and added a darker saturation to give a more dominant effect. You can see that the image isn't perfect and that is what I like about it as the movement from the water blends into the picture with the water on it causing a stronger 3-D image to a rise. The feelings in which all four of these pictures portrays is a sense of drowning and which could be a metaphor of drowning in your own emotions.
